Why is Omega‑3 important?

Omega-3 can lower blood pressure, reduces triglycerides in the blood, helps reduce joint inflammation in rheumatoid disease, helps nourish brain and eye function, helps prevent and alleviate the risks of dementia, depression, asthma, migraine, and diabetes, as well as reducing the risk of heart disease and ischemic stroke.

"The grey matter in our brain is about 40% DHA. As well as brain health, DHA is also important for eye care and general health. EPA is more about reducing inflammation so it's very important for reducing the chances of heart disease. DHA and EPA work independently in many ways and together in others. There are links to benefits across almost every ailment you can think of including ADHD, asthma, improving mood and alleviating symptoms of depression. Omega-3s should definitely be classed as vitamins!"

Understanding Omega‑3 Types: EPA, DHAALA

Omega-3s are essential fats that our bodies require but cannot produce on their own. The main types of Omega-3s are EPA, DHA, and ALA. These fatty acids play a crucial role in maintaining optimal health, particularly benefiting our eyes, heart, and brain. 40% of the grey matter in the brain is made up of Omega 3 in DHA form, so increasing our intake of omega 3 essential fatty acids boosts the building blocks of the brain. This helps with attentiveness and focus, improves cognitive function, brain development and brain cell regeneration.

Dry eyes and irritated skin can be uncomfortable and antisocial. No one enjoys scratching during meetings or at dinner, and it can get worse when we sweat, so the gym or that weekend run can become a deeply unpleasant experience. If your skin is driving you mad, or you’re suffering hair thinning or hair loss, depression, joint pain or stiffness, you may be lacking in omega-3. If your body does not have enough omega-3 fats available, it may start asking for help, and the discomfort could intensify.

When it comes Omega-3 and nutrition, it’s really important we get the right kind of Omega-3. That starts with understanding the different types.

There are three main types of Omega-3, all of which fall into the same category, but they are really different. We are talking about DHA, EPA, and ALA.

DHA – also known as Docosahexaenoic Acid – DHA is what makes up 40% of the grey matter. It’s an absolutely vital component, of the brain and the retina.

EPA – also known as Eicosapentaenoic Acid – EPA stimulates powerful anti-inflammatory processes in the body.

ALA – also known as Alpha Linolenic Acid - ALA is an inactive form of Omega-3. It’s very commonly found but it needs to be converted by the body to be effective, the conversion rate is incredibly low.

So when it comes to the types Omega-3 that are most useful for our bodies and nutrition, we’re looking for a high strength DHA and EPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

The algae are grown in tanks at a Pharmaceutical-quality facility, rather than taken from the ocean. This is to ensure the highest possible purity. No additional chemicals are required.

It is in Triglyceride form. The key aspect is that we grow our Microalgae in controlled conditions at a Pharmaceutical-quality specialist facility. Unlike seawater where contamination and heavy metal issues arise, we are able to control absolutely everything and therefore guarantee the complete purity of our product.

Yes we are based in UK and operate under the jurisdiction of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) plus local authority regulations. As such, we have to test everything independently and indeed our products are subject to random testing by authorities.

We use Schizochytrium sp. algae.

We use D-Alpha Tocopherol (Vitamin E) extracted from Sunflower Oil. It is a small amount, approximately 0.1%, solely to provide antioxidant protection for the Omega-3 Oil. It isn't at a level of nutritional significance.

We use an enzyme extraction method. Cold pressing isn't possible because the microalgae are too small.

We use a small amount of Carrageenan to help form the capsule. It is perfectly safe and not something to avoid. It wrongs gets linked with data only relevant to 'polygeenan', which is a degraded derivative not used in food, or with data wrongly extrapolated from animals at irrelevant doses. We wouldn't dream of using any compounds unless we were 100% confident in their safety and suitability.

No Omega-3 doesn’t contain any iodine.

Your Questions Answered

What kind of treated water is used in the tanks? Is it potable city water? What is a basic micronutrient in your case? Hi, the water is potable but purified to ensure the correct purity and composition. The micronutrient is glucose from basic plant sources.
what is the finished product oil in capsule "freshness" ? Is it superior to the recommended minimum for peroxide, anisidine, and TOTOX oxidation values ≤ 5 mEq/kg, ≤20 and ≤26 respectively? Hi, the TOTOX specification for the Algal Omega-3 Oil is ≤26 but our results have never exceeded 7. Our Peroxide value specification is indeed ≤5 Meq/kg.
Hi, I've read your article on Omega 3 obtained from algae in which you state you are cutting out the middle man (fish) to provide EPA, DPA from ALA. But I'm still not clear on how you manage to do this, as EPA and DPA from algae needs converting from ALA first. Are you saying you have already converted them, so human bodies don't need to? Hi, the microalgae provide Omega-3 in the forms of EPA & DHA rather than ALA, so no conversion is required either as part of the process or by the human body. This is very important because ALA does indeed need to be converted into EPA and DHA to be utilised, but that conversion in the body is 5% (EPA) and 0.5% (DHA) at best.
Hello. I currently take 1 x MultiVit, 1 x B12 (1000mcg), 1 x D3 (1000iu), 2 x Omega 3 and 1 x Turmeric daily. I noticed that there is some overlap, such as D3 being in the MultiVit, D3 and Omega 3 supplements. Am I getting too much of any particular vitamins or minerals please? Anything I could or should stop taking? Thank you. Hi, that sounds like a really beneficial daily regime. The collective level of D3 is 1400iu, which is well within the established safe window for daily intake (<4000iu). The only other nutrient for consideration is Vitamin B12, however being a water-based vitamin, the body will grab what it needs and any surplus will pass through harmlessly. Again, the intake is well within the safe window.
I'm a long-time user of your great supplements, starting with Omega 3 from the UK, and with the expansion of your products, I have a question re. alternating supplements:If multis are alternated with bone care, every other day there will be an absence of several key supplements, such as iron and iodine. Doesn't this mean that over time, there will be an insufficient ingestion of these important ingredients? Hi, thank you for the kind words. Alternating MultVit and Bone Care is a really good ongoing regime. With ongoing intake through the alternating approach, we fully expect you to obtain sufficient amounts of all of the respective nutrients across both formulas. After taking any supplement for a good ongoing amount of time (2-3 weeks+), missing days is fine as your nutrient status tends to be improved and better as standard.
Hello, I'm looking to order the algae based omega 3 supplements, but I'm wondering if it's third party tested for contaminants like heavy metals. Hi, yes our Omega-3 is fully tested at a third party accredited laboratory. Heavy metals (and other ocean-related contaminants) are not risk items as our algae are grown in closed conditions at a specialist facility rather than taken from the ocean. This allows complete control over purity.

Recommended to me by my personal trainer as a vegan alternative to their own supplements. This is the best option on the marketplace apparently.

A great vegan product. It's much better and more sustainable to obtain the Omega-3 from the source- microalgae, rather than fish.

This is the best vegan omega 3 I have ever tried. My skin has improved since using it and cognitively, I feel that I am learning faster. It has only been about 2-3 weeks that I am using it and already feel better. I will definitely buy it again. I would also like to add that when asking the vegan community on reddit which vegan omega 3 they recommended and why, they mostly said "Vegetology". You will feel a difference.

I saw Brian Johnson using your Omega supplement, so I decided to give it a try! It’s great, but I just wish it didn’t have carrageenan and had a higher dosage per capsule—reaching at least 1 gram of Omegas. Otherwise, it would be perfect!
