I use your vegan D3. My question is - don't I need to be taking a k2 supplement as well? My understanding is that you need K2 to process the D3. Thanks!Hi, dietary Vitamin K2 is sufficient to aid the absorption of supplementation Vitamin D3. It is most important to take Vitamin K2 if you are using Vitamin D3 and Calcium too. For this reason we combination D3 + K2 + Calcium in our Bone Care formula. For our standalone Vitamin D3 products we don't include any other items in the formula to reflect that many of our customers combine them with other supplements.
Hi,
I am interested in your Vit D products. I noticed you mention that lichen is a sustainable source of this - also that many of your products come from Europe. Could you clarify how the lichen is sourced? I believe some lichen can take 20+ years to grow, so it must be quite tricky to farm/manage sustainably, but I'm not sure what species are involved in the supply chain for these products. More information would be great.
I noticed you don't seem to have a general sustainability policy listed in the Menu/Links section either - do you have one you could share?
People who are vegetarian or vegan often care a great deal about the environment and planetary health as well as for animals.
Thanks for any advice.
Kind regards
KateHi, we use established and designated growing sites for the Lichen (it has other uses too, which is important so that we can tap into a viable ongoing supply). This ensures sustainability, even though it does take ~10 years for the lichen to grow. Sustainability is one of our central pillars at Vegetology. You can read more about our values on this 'About Us' page, linked from the foot of our website: https://www.vegetology.com/its-in-our-nature
Morning,
I take your multi vitamin and omega 3.
I read on email that vit d and b12 could/ should be taken along side.
Could you explain reasoning as I thought multi vitamin would supply all D and B12 required ?
ThanksHi, We agree that a combination of our MultiVit and Omega-3 provides a good daily intake of both Vitamin D3 and B12. We get asked a lot about the safety of combining products, as some individuals seek (or are recommended to take) higher doses of Vitamin D3 and/or B12.
I was curious to know if the vitamin D3 in your supplement is sourced from China. Are there any ingredients in your products that are sourced from China?Hi, no we source everything from Europe (mainly UK local suppliers where possible).
Hi, I still have 2 unopened bottles of vitamin D3. It says best before end 08/23 and it's already September. Can I still use them? Thank you.Hi, if the unopened bottles have been stored correctly (cool, dry location) throughout the shelf-life, they are ok to use by the end of 2023.
Your website says this product is sourced from lichens but under the ingredient list it says -Ingredients Maltodextrin, Vitamin D3 (Starch, Sucrose, Silicon Dioxide, Antioxidants (D-Alpha Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate), Cholecalciferol), Anti-Caking Agents (Stearic Acid, Magnesium Stearate).Hi, Cholecalciferol is the labelling/legal name for Vitamin D3, regardless of the source. The other components in the brackets are part of the spray-dried powder preparation of the Lichen extract. The Antioxidants are needed to protect the material from oxidative damage and the Anti-caking agents are to allow flow so the powder can be compressed into tablets.
vitamin D3 Vitashine also contains E414 & E301, why don't you mention these ingredients?Hi, full ingredient lists for all of our products are displayed on the product pages and the labels. E414 is Arabic Gum, E301 is Vitamin C as Sodium Ascorbate. Both are of course listed.
Can I cut these pills in half in order to get half dose? (Are the contents homogenously spread out?)Hi, yes you can do this and yes the contents are homogeneous. The tablets are designed to be chewable, so you can literally bite a tablet in half if desired. An alternative is to consider our VitD3 Spray, which is dosed at 1000iu per day through 5 x 200iu spray pumps. That gives you the flexibility to take e.g. 3 x sprays per day if you are seeking less, such as 600iu.
how does your 100 Intl. Units compare to 1000 MCG, which we’ve had on other vitamins in the past? I can’t find any conversion on the Web so thought you might be able to help? Inquiring minds, eh? Hi, the conversion for Vitamin D3 is: 1mcg = 40iu. If you look on the product pages and labels, we state the doses in both iu and mcg.
Hi. Is the D3 vegan in your vegan omega 3 capsules? What is it derived from? Thanks.Hi, yes we use Vitamin D3 from lichen.
I was wondering how the supplements get delivered? One of the known issues with ordering supplements from abroad is the concern they might be shipped in unwanted condition like extreme weather hot or cold etc.
How are your products shipped?Hi, we send by the postal system. Our products have all been extensively tested to ensure they remain stable even if exposed to high or low temperatures.
Hello,
I'm interested in your Vitashine VIt D products. I can't use lanolin based ones because I have a severe allergy to lanolin and I had severe eczema flare-ups over the entire body like chemical burns after being put on a high dose of VItamin D. I only found out it was lanolin based through researching something else as most products don't actually state, from lanolin!
I also have a mould allergy. So my question would be around the lichen and fungus? I can eat mushrooms. I just wondered if you could shed any light on this or more details about your process?
Many thanks,
Kind regards,
BlakeHi, we have many customers using Vitashine as an alternative to Lanolin Vit D3 due to allergies, so it sounds ideal for you. In terms of the process, the Vit D3 sits in the oily part of the lichen, whereas allergies associated with moulds are typically in the aqueous or protein parts. It is highly unlikely any allergy-causing fractions would carry through from our process. Please do email us ([email protected]) if you want to discuss in more details, but we are very confident you will find our VitD3 products agreeable.
I’m wondering why you use maltodextrin in your D3 when it’s toxic? And it’s the first ingredient. Hi, Maltodextrin is perfectly safe and inert. We use it in the VitD3 tablets as it allows a chewable structure with some inherent sweetness without the needs for a very complex tablet structure full of many excipients. Please don't rely on blogs for scientific conclusions, as they often give no consideration to real world dosages or ingredient purities. Water is a poison at the right dose.
Under the "warning" on the D3's packaging, it says, "Do not exceed the stated dose" (of 1000 IU). Given that the safe upper limit for daily D3 intake is 4000 IU, and my doctor has ok'd me to take that dose, is there any reason I can't take four of these tablets daily? Will one of the inactive ingredients cause side effects if I do?Hi, if your Doctor has advised a higher dose then it is fine to take multiple tablets. We have to include the statutory warnings, especially with chewable tablets where it can be tempting to take more than one. We would not expect any side effects if taking 4 x tablets. However, please see we also offer a 2500iu tablet in case that is more suitable for your higher dose needs.
Hi, is it ok to take this product (shortly) after the best before date? I found some old bottles in the cupboard and would rather not waste them.Hi, yes as long as the product has been stored correctly it will be fine for at least 3 months beyond the stated best before date.
Hello - I'm wondering if you have any peer-reviewed research looking at the properties of your lichen vitamin D and how it compares with respect to bioavailability to lanolin-derived vitamin D.
Thanks!Hi, as a key part of our research and regulatory work, we tested (and continue to test) to demonstrate that we are obtaining Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) and it can be identified accordingly using accredited assay methods. As it is Vitamin D3, there is no reason to expect any beneficial or bioavailability difference to any animal source of Vitamin D3.
I’ve read that you must combine vitamin K2 with D3 to avoid calcium build-up in the arteries. Is there any truth in this?Hi, D3 works together with Calcium and K2 for absorption. There is normally sufficient Ca and K2 in the diet to support this absorption. However, it is a combination we very much support, and use it in our MultiVit and Bone Care formulas.
Hi,
Are you able to provide information for how many micrograms of cholecalciferol there is per gram (or mg)?Hi, there are 25 micrograms (1000iu) of Vitamin D3 per tablet. Each tablet weighs approximately 0.5g, so it is equivalent to 50 micrograms per gram.
Hey, we've been taking Vitamin D by chewing, for a long time. In the last shipment we received a few days ago ,the feeling that the pill is harder and crumbles in the mouth. Were there any changes?Hi, there have been no changes. Could the tablets have got cold during storage at all? That is the usual reason.
Hello,
I have alpha gal syndrome (AGS) also called red meat allergy. I am allergic to all things mammal and any algae that contain galactose alpha 1,3 galactose. Just to be sure, I’d like to know if you know for sure that your lichen vitamin D3 contains galactose alpha 1,3 galactose.
Any other products I should know about?
Thank you so much!
Alice LittonHi, no the lichen Vitamin D3 doesn't contain Galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose
I noticed you give a nice discount for 6-pack of D3. This is a 1 year supply. Is it ok to store it for 1 year or a little more? What is the expiration date?Hi, the shelf-life is 24 months and we manufacture regularly, so it is fine to store for >1 year.
What is the process in which you extract and purify the vitamin D3 and turn it into an ingestible tablet? Is it a similar process to how lanolin is extracted from wool, with washing, and UV exposure?Hi, we create an oily extract and either use this in the Oral Spray (which is an Oil) or spray dry the oil in order to use it in tablet forms. The Lanolin process is different whereby UV treatment to chemically-convert sterols takes place.
Is either the Vitashine tablets or the spray sugar and oil free? I am on a special diet and can not have any added fats or sugar.Hi, the Vitamin D3 Spray contain Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) as the carrier oil. The Vitamin D3 tablets don't have any added fat or sugar as such. The Vitamin D3 itself is however spray-dried and a tiny amount of Sucrose (and residual MCT from the Vitamin D3 initial oil form) are present but the levels are miniscule. The tablets should be absolutely fine for any diet.
I am currently taking vit B12, omega-3 and alternating between MultiVit and Bone Care, I am looking at the D3, depending on my blood results the 1000 or 2500, can I take that with the rest? Hi, yes that would be fine. The recognised upper safe limit for Vitamin D3 taken daily is 4000iu, which you will still be well below.
I am a customer of your vitamin D3 and have been some time. A request: Can you please stop using maltodextrin in your vitamin D3? Maltodextrin is not good for us. Please take it out of your D3 or I am going to make the difficult decision to no longer get my D3 from you.Hi, we used Maltodextrin as an inert excipient to form a simple tablet that can be chewed or swallowed. It allows a suitable structure and also has a natural degree of sweetness, which allows us to avoid using loads of different excipients and artificial sweeteners. The problem with many videos and blogs found online is they draw completely inaccurate conclusions because they don't take dose into account. In real world use (and certainly the low quantity we use) Maltodextrin is completely inert, safe, and is a better option that alternatives. We wouldn't dream of using any compounds unless we had 100% confidence in them. We do offer Vitamin D3 in a spray form should your concerns remain.

Do I need to take the vegan d3 with a meal? Is it fat soluble like the lanolin based d3? Trying for figure out whan and how to take them, I drink coffee in the morning and read that you cant take them until 30 min after drinking the coffee. if I drink coffee and eat breakfast and wait for 30 minutes I wont be taking the d with a meal. Can you suggest what is the best way for me to take the vegan d3?Hi, yes we recommend taking any and all supplements at a meal time. our Vitamin D3 is fat soluble and there is sufficient fat within the spray-dried format to absorb without the need for a specifically oily meal. We recommend taking the tablet at Breakfast time.
There is no need to wait for a period of time after drinking coffee when it comes to Vitamin D3. If you take any B Vitamins, it is always useful to wait 30 minutes or so after drinking coffee (i.e. until you've been to the bathroom). The reason being, coffee is diuretic and water-based B Vitamins are at risk of washing straight through, so have a pee first!
I am looking to buy your vitamin d3 tablets vitashine and was wondering if I should be concerned about the effects of vitamin D3 causing calcified arteris when the body has low amounts of K2 vitamin. Should I also have K2 to supplementHi, the vast majority of diets contain sufficient Vitamin K2 to overcome any potential issue of Vitamin D3 calcification.
We are, however, big advocates of the benefits of Vitamin K2 and the specific combination of D3 + K2 + Calcium + Magnesium. We use this combination in our Multi Vit and Bone Care products.
Vitamin D absorption is impaired by Vitamin E. Every single vegan Vitamin D supplement I look for contains Vitamin E, including yours. Why use Vitamin E, then?Hi, that's not strictly true. Very high doses could have an interaction in relation to absorption, but not the levels used in supplements. To answer your question, we use a small amount of Vitamin E as an antioxidant to protect the Vitamin D3 from oxidative damage.
I miss a combination from Vit. K2 and Vit. D , why do you not have this?Hi, we offer a combination of Vitamins D3 and K2 within our Bone Care and MultiVit formulas.
Hello, I want to know how many time i have to supplement your vitamine d3 if i have 25-(OH) vit D on 8.7 ng/mL (also, is there an overdose if i took it too many time?) By other hand, i have my calcium on 9.9, i was planning on taking VegVit also, is it reccomendable? meaning i plan to stop eating almonds because it will take it up too much, and i'm on the limit for overdose. I dont know if its viable. Thank you!Hi, you should see a good improvement in your Vitamin D status within 1-2 weeks of taking Vitashine 1000iu. If you do combine with MultiVit, it will give you a very good daily intake (including Vitamin K2 and some Calcium) while remaining well without the recognised safe level of Vitamin D3.
What is the efficacy of absorption of Lichen vit D to Lanolin vit D Are there any studies to show this? The Vitamin D3 compound itself is chemically identical and we do not expect any difference in efficacy. Blood studies we performed in India showed it is bioavailable.
My understanding is that your company was the first to market with a vegan, lichen-based source of Vitamin D3 / cholecalciferol known as Vitashine.
Regarding your Vitashine formula, what is the manufacturing process that you employ to derive cholecalciferol from lichens? How does your manufacturing process compare to the manufacturing process of a lanolin-based cholecalciferol?Hi, the lichen we use naturally contains Vitamin D3. We extract the D3-rich oil from the lichen and concentrate this. It is very different to lanolin and other animal-origin Vitamin D3, which is synthesised.
I have been taking the the vitamin d3 2500ui supplement during the winter.
I wonder what your dosage recommendation is for the spring / summer / autumn months with an office job in London?
I am 39 years old, I am quite active outdoors running and cycling a few times a week.
I do suffer from SAD over the winter months.
Can you overdo your toxicity levels of D3 if I take 2500ui throughout the year? Was thinking of getting the 1000ui version for spring / summer / autumn.Hi, the recognised upper safe daily intake of Vitamin D3 is 4000iu, so you are fine to take 2500iu per day during the year. From your description, I would suggest you consider taking 2500iu per day during the Autumn and Winter months, but perhaps reduce to 2500iu every 2-3 days during the summer months. While there is no harm maintaining the higher ongoing dose, you probably don't need to be quite so high in summer (depending if we get one in the UK that is!).
How is the vegan vitamin D 500% NRV?The NRV for Vitamin D3 is 200iu, so Vitashine 1000iu tablets are 500% this NRV.
What dosage is suitable for osteoporosis? Is a vitamin D3 + K2 a better choice?Hi, 1000iu is a good dose of Vitamin D3. It is worth considering our Joint-Vie formula, which provides Vitamin D3 + K2 + Calcium (a very important combination for Bone Care) plus other key nutrients too.
Which bodies have approved your products?Hi, the main regulations we work to are European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Australia Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) regulations, and we're audited accordingly. Auditing is conducted by local and international authorities.
I received my order and noticed that the VitD3 does not contain VitK to aid absorption. Is there a reason for this?Vitashine supplements are Vitamin D3 alone. That is to allow customers to use the Vitamin D3 without their other diet and supplement regimes as they see fit. We do offer the combination of Vitamin D3, K2 and Calcium within our Bone Care supplement if desired.
Is this suitable for pregnant women in her second trimester ?Hi, yes it is very beneficial to Mum and Baby. You can also consider our PregnaVie supplement, which contains Vitamin D3, and is specially formulated to support from conception right through to breast feeding.
Cholecalciferol is derived from lanolin in lambs wool, this is not vegan yet you label yourself as such? Our Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) is extracted from a lichen. You are correct that traditional sources of cholecalciferol are animal sources including lanolin and animal skin. Our source is 100% vegan.
Are there any mushroom- or funghi-derived ingredients in Vitashine 1000iu?Hi, no, Vitashine products don't contain any fungi or derivatives.
Would I get too much Vitamin D3 if I take Omeag-3 and MultiVit together?A combination of Omega-3 and MultiVit is a really good supplement regime. While both contain D3, the collective level is very low (400iu) and actually many people are advised to take a higher dose. From a safety perspective it is well below any concern level, which would be upwards of 10,000iu per dose.
Where can I see the Kosher label for Vitashine D3 1000iu?Vitashine products are not currently Kosher certified. They are Kosher suitable, but at this stage we have not been audited to obtain Kosher certification for the products themselves. However, Vitashine Vitamin D3 as an ingredient is Kosher certified.
Is the d-alpha tocopherol in Vitashine D3 no longer from soy, but from the newer sunflower-derived source? We now use D-Alpha Tocopherol from sunflower now rather than soy.
How should I store Vitashine?Vitashine should be stored in a cool dry place, out of the sight and reach of children. Refrigeration is recommended to maintain maximum freshness. Use within 3 months of opening.
Allergy advice with Vitashine?Vitashine is free from sugar, wheat, gluten and dairy products.
Is Vitamin D3 superior to Vitamin D2?The healthy debate continues on this topic. In our opinion, the published research suggests Vitamin D3 is superior. One particular peer-reviewed study concluded that Vitamin D3 is at least 87% more potent than Vitamin D2.
Can I take higher doses of Vitamin D3?We recognise many people seek higher doses of Vitamin D3 than the RDA of 200IU. That is why we offer flexibility and options of doses. Always consult your Doctor or Health Practitioner if you are considering taking a higher dose.
Where does Vitamin D3 usually come from?Meat and fish are the most common sources of Vitamin D3 in the diet. The reason conventional Vitamin D3 supplements are not suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans is because the D3 is extracted from sheep's wool (Lanolin) or other animal sources.
Do lichens have proven safety?Yes. In fact the lichen we use is classed as a food ingredient with a long history of safety.
Is Vitashine registered with the Vegan Society? There is justified skepticism about vegan source Vitamin D3 supplements and we are very proud that our products are registered with the Vegan Society and Vegetarian Society.
What is Vitashine and where is it from?Vitashine is a vegan and vegetarian Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) nutritional supplement. Our Vitamin D3 comes from a plant source called a lichen.
How do I use Vitashine?Vitashine is supplied as tablets which can be chewed or swallowed with water, or as an oral spray which can be administered directly into the mouth or sprayed onto food.
Can my children take Vitashine?Yes. It is widely recommended that children are given Vitamin D3 and we recommend using the Vitashine Spray, at a daily dose of 200IU per day (1 spray).
Can I take Vitashine during pregnancy?Yes, but always seek advice from your Health Practitioner before taking any supplements. Vitamin D helps you regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body. A BBC report concluded "Pregnant women "must take Vitamin D supplements"".
